MVDS Members Receive National Awards
Our Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society webmaster, Sharon Swaney, was the recipient of the American Dahlia Society Gold Medal at the National Capital Dahlia show held in September. And Jim Chuey was presented the ADS Clean Stock Award at the national show which was held in Reston, Virginia. Sharon continually updates our web site and keeps information current. Jim provided the initial support for virus research through the Scheetz-Chuey Foundation. Congratulations to Sharon and Jim for their continued contributions in the society.
Fall Harvest Party Held
Each fall after the tubers are stored and packed away for the winter, the Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society holds a banquet to celebrate another year of growing our beautiful dahlias. In November society members met for a catered dinner at the Lariccia Center in Boardman Park. The American Dahlia Society representative, Joyce Habeger, presented the ADS award to Stan Vuletich for his contributions to promoting the dahlia in the Youngstown area. Stan plants and maintains the dahlia garden at Mill Creek MetroPark as well as other public gardens.
Society members were entertained by the musical selections of local electric violinist Rachel Aiken. A good time was had by all.
Holiday Tree Decorated
The Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society again participated in the Festival of Trees at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks this year. Our society was one of 50 non-profit groups that decorated a live tree with ornaments or decor reflecting the groups activity or cause. The MVDS tree is unique with the faux dahlias adorning the branches. This is a positive step in promoting the society in the area to over hundreds of visitors to the park. Our members not only grow and show dahlias, but have fun while promoting our favorite flower.
