It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of

Sheila Bowman
July 5, 1940 – December 20, 2024

Sheila was a longtime member of the Mahoning Valley and East Liverpool Dahlia Societies. She will be remembered by her dahlia friends for her kindness, society participation, and tremendous talent as a designer. She was an inspiration to many and so generous in sharing her talent by teaching design to aspiring designers. The dahlia world was certainly enhanced by her designs.

She also founded the Nature Lover’s Garden Club, participated in the Blue Star Marker program honoring veterans, and was active in the Ohio Judges Council ( a group of nationally accredited flower show judges) and Ikebana.

Sheila was born in East Liverpool, Ohio and lived in Leetonia most of her life. She was the beloved wife of Willis Bowman, whom she married in 1960. She was the proud mother of Steve (Mary Jane) Bowman of Picayune, Mississippi, and the cherished grandmother of John (Maria) Bowman, of Covington, Louisiana.

In late May 2024, the students of Alexandria Szakacs' class at Miami University enjoyed a visit by MVDS dahlia experts, Harriet Chandler, Jim Chuey, and Randy/Kathy Foith.

The experts engaged the class with a slide presentation on dahlia cultivation and classification. They enthusiastically fielded questions from curious students, sharing their wealth of knowledge and practical insights.

Feedback from the students indicates that the presentation was a resounding success and perhaps sparked a newfound interest in the fascinating world of dahlias?
